Tuning In

Hello Reader,

Here we are - we made it through the Spring's continued rain and are now into an early Summer heat wave; all the while the global wars rage on, and our country grapples with its current state of democracy. Among these big environmental things, I hope you are continuing to find ways to ground and connect to your Self as we discussed last month, especially in the small day to day routines.

Just the other day I was buzzing with anxiety, checking the news on repeat for updates and could feel myself getting dysregulated. I snapped at our older son - who has no clue what’s happening on the global scale - and realized I needed a break... So, we took a bike ride and then splashed in the kiddie pool in our yard. I felt my feet moving the pedals. I put my phone away, noticed the green leaves and blue skies, saw a turtle on the bike path, heard birdsong, smelled the river and when we got back I listened to our older son splashing while our younger son blew raspberries on my leg. I felt more settled.

Moving our bodies and tuning into our senses are two incredibly helpful strategies to return to regulation; pulling away from the thoughts of the brain and dropping into the feelings of the body. In addition to the 5 senses grounding practice that helps bring us back to our Self, I invite you to look yourself in the mirror, take a few breaths and honestly ask yourself, “How are you Reader?” Breathe and listen in - maybe you’ll cry, maybe you’ll be surprised at how proud of yourself you are, or maybe you won’t have any words but you’ll feel something inside.

I find that answering with the 2 word check-in that Brene Brown used and popularized in the throes of Covid is most helpful because I'm rarely just feeling one thing these days. Give it a go - slow down, check-in with your Self and share 2 words about how you’re feeling right now. It’s okay if they seem opposite. Right now, I am...

Once you tune in and get your 2 word check-in, let that guide you to one of these 3 practices to try when you need the support:

What I'm Listening To

On Being, a podcast hosted by Krista Tippett to help us replenish and orient in the immensity of our lives, just started a 6-week reflection course - Hope Portal.

“Nothing new has even entered this world without someone who first imagined a possibility others couldn't yet see or believe in, and then brought realities into being that most of us can later not imagine the world without...”
